The Expedition
how it all began
The Antarctic Fire Angels (AFA) was born at the Women in the Fire Service (WFS) Training and Development event in 2019.
Keynote speaker, Sophie Montange from the Army’s Ice Maiden team said that, “We wanted to show women what women are capable of.” This statement, along with Sophie’s infectious passion was the inspiration behind the whole expedition.
The plan was to take a team of female firefighters across Antarctica “To inspire women and girls to achieve their ambitions.” Throughout this journey team AFA has changed and evolved. We have seen team members leave through personal circumstances, each and every one a brave decision to leave such a project that involves so much passion and commitment. The final team being George and Bex.
Each and every team member both past and present have made this expedition possible. Thanks to them, George and Bex have made history. Not only becoming the first emergency services team to traverse Antarctica but have also pioneered a new route – Unio Glacier – Constellation Inlet – South Pole. A total of 1230km.
“Ordinary women doing extraordinary things.”
